OpenAI has decided to move on from Sam Altman and the company has even confirmed Emmett Shear as the new CEO of the AI company. Emmett Shear is clearly not an unknown candidate thanks to his recognition of being the CEO of Twitch which was his address till March this year. Here is Shear confirming the news via this post on X
Today I got a call inviting me to consider a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: to become the interim CEO of @OpenAI. Shear comes with a bag of experience in the tech space, being part of known ventures. But what does Shear bring to OpenAI, a company that has revolutionised AI in a quick time under the helm of Altman and what kind of expertise does he bring to the table to build the interim future at the AI company. Here are the details
Shear did his education from Yale University in 2005 with a major in computer science. He was also an active part of Y Combinator where he built a calendar application called Kiko with Justin Kan. Shear decided to sell the app to eBay for a reported $250,000 after Google launched its Calendar app.
Entering The World Of Live Platform
Shear’s first tryst with live videos came with Justin.tv that was started in 2006 along with Kan, Micheal Seibel and Kyle Vogt. This platform showcased a live feed of Justin Kan’s life through a webcam that was attached to his head. The company later pivoted to allow other people to host their videos and launched the new look Justin.tv in 2007 where it got more than 30 million monthly unique visitors. Justin.tv was eventually shut down in August, 2014.
But as Justin.tv was showing promise, Shear was building a separate platform catering to gamers which was called TwitchTV. The platform went live in beta on July 6, 2011 and more than 4 years
Future Of OpenAI With Shear
Shear is going to head an AI company that is fully invested in the technology and already shaping the future of AI with its moves. But what does the new interim CEO of OpenAI think about AI? His comments in recent times shed a worrying picture for the company. In a podcast, Shear said that AI may not be the smartest intelligence and talked about his concerns about AI.
He feels that once the technology starts to self-improve, it can be a dangerous thing because he feels that intelligence is power. In fact, Shear has talked openly about the safety side of AI discourse which suggests he might bring a conservative touch to OpenAI which clearly has impressed with big guys at OpenAI who have appointed him as the new CEO of their company.
